When the faithful gather on the last day of all

On that last day, when Time has wrung the last light from the sun like the juice from a fruit, I think the redeemed of the Lord will gather by the sea and wonder at the sight of one another.

On one hand will be those for whom faith came simply. They heard, they believed, they followed. The journey was easy and they arrived quickly. Now they are here, refreshed and ready with a quick eagerness.

On the other hand are the children for whom nothing was simple. Hearing, they doubted; believing, they questioned; and following, they explored side roads and brambles, lost their way along swampy roads, and wandered through woods and desert places with no roads but those known to the jackals. And they are here, weary but no less willing than their brothers; haunted by what they have seen, some with madness and grief still in their eyes.

Yet here they all are, come together at the end, to begin together.

“If you had come with us at the start,” said those of the first group, “you would not have suffered so.”

“If we had gone with you at the start,” said those of the second group, “it would not have been honest.”
