Summer of Monsters: Teju Jagua

Not all monsters have the personality to go with their horrifying appearances. Take Teju Jagua, for example.

Native to Paraguay, Teju Jagua is a lizard with the head of a dog and eyes that can throw flames. In that regard it could be perfectly at home in “The Isle of Doctor Moreau” with other hybrids like Frog and Toad, but campers who have met it in the rainforest tell a different tale. They instead praise Teju Jagua for its slow movements, its calm demeanor and its willingness to help them light campfires. Children even report that it helps them make s’mores by gazing at marshmallows after they put them on sticks

A spirit of the caves and protector of fruits, Teju Jagua nowadays find employment at Paraguayan banks where they work as tellers and prevent runs, and in open-air markets, where they strictly enforce the “five bananas or fewer” rules.
